Our laboratory studies the higher order organization of chromosomes, a new frontier in the field of biology. Our studies focus on the cellular functions and molecular mechanism of members of the Structural Maintenance of Chromosome (SMC) family of protein complexes. These complicated molecular machines mediate the ultra-structure of the genome and are central to the genome’s stability and dynamics. The malfunction of SMCs is associated with several genetic disorders and cancer.Our studies provide new insights into fundamental cellular processes and impact human health.
